It has been known for a long time that over packaging has a great effect on the environment. The different problems that packaging creates on the environment include the reduction of valuable resources and the impacts on animals and plant species. There is a way that we can stop the huge impacts that are being made on the environment, and this is through the means of recycling.
VALUABLE RESOURCES
In order to package items, it takes a lot of energy, water and other natural resources to produce some packaging. One of the main commodities used in the production of plastic to go into packaging is oil, which is a rare and valued commodity. As plastic is being made in huge amounts, oil is becoming rarer and rarer. As people throw their packaging away, sometimes this is only after one use, the valuable commodities that have gone into the production process are lost. Over the past couple of years, Australia has doubled the amount of natural resources they use yearly. Production of plastic is not the only cause for the rise in amounts of natural resources used, but it is big part of the problem.
PACKAGING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
After packaging has been used it gets thrown away, this mostly includes putting wrappers in the bins at home. But sometimes the wrappers that should be put in the bin at home is littered around parks and other places. Waste creates a substantial amount of greenhouse gas, statistics show that 1.9 million tonnes of waste produces the same amount of greenhouse gas as 860,000 cars. Litter that is created from dropping packaging in places that it shouldn't be can end up in many places that it should not be. These are places like, streams, rivers and oceans. As the litter can be mistaken by marine life and birds as food. This can cause serious injuries to them and sometimes death.
DID YOU KNOW?
The state government made a commitment in the last election in order to use the powers of the environment protection authority to require brand owners and industry members to take back packaging and other waste if agreed targets are not met.
In America at a 'Walmart Packaging Sustainability Conference' a company was awarded a prize because they had increased its packaging. The reasons that a prize was rewarded to a company for increasing their packaging was because of the reasons listed below.
<Security and Protection: Some packaging protects products from damage and keeps it secure from the manufacture to the customer.
<Tamper Evidence: Customers want to know that they are buying something that has remained untouched since it was made.
<Freshness/Spoilage and breakdown prevention: This is keeping a barrier between the product and its travelling environment as well as keeping it from contact from other contaminants, this makes the product last longer, especially if it is food.
<Keeping a bundle together: Bundle wrapping provides minimal packaging while maintaining the honesty of the product.
<Marketing and messaging: This is the packaging on the item that people are buying that gives information from slogans and the company name, right to the nutrition information (if it is food) and other important information.
<Theft Prevention: This is packaging that companies make larger to make it harder to steal the product off the shelf.
These reasons are why that company at Walmart's Packaging Sustainability Conference got a prize for creating more packaging for their products.
