Whittaker's Chocolate
Whittaker's Chocolate is an over packaged product when you compare the packaging to other chocolates that are selling in the market. Whittaker's chocolate has two layers of packaging, the first is the outer layer which is known as the Marketing and Messaging type of packaging which is where the packaging on the item that people are buying give information. Things like slogans, the company name, nutrition information and other important information.
Despite being over packaged, Whittaker's Chocolate is a fair trade chocolate.
Fair Trade is an organised social movement that aims to help producers in developing countries to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. It takes away the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards. It also focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries.
Inside the chocolate the fair trade part comes from cocoa beans and butter from the largest cooperative in Ghana called Kauapa Kokoo. Fair Trade Sugar comes from a cooperative in Costa Rico CoopeAgri R.L .
Whittaker's chocolate is made from paper and aluminium foil. It takes 200-500 years for aluminium foil to biodegrade which is why people are trying to push recycling on aluminium products considering how much we use it in our daily lives. It also takes paper around 2-4 weeks to decompose.
Different packaging tecniques that went into this product include:
< Tamper Evidence which is where customers can tell that they are buying something that has remained untouched since it was made.
< Freshness/ Spoilage and breakdown prevention, this is keeping a barrier between the product and its travelling environment as well as keeping it from contact from other contaminates which is helping to make sure that the product lasts longer, especially in this case if it is food.
<Marketing and messaging, this is where the packaging on the item gives information about the product. This is things such as the slogans, the company name and the nutrition information. Whittaker's chocolate is a great example of this type of packaging as the only reason for the outside layer of packaging is because the company wants to advertise what they are selling and their name.
While I was looking on the Whittaker's Website I found a question that asked,
"How does Whittaker's approach environmental issues?" and the answer was as follows.
"At Whittaker's we are conscious of environmental issues and will always endeavour to have polices that do not harm the environment." This may be a company that is protective of the environment, but their packaging is not as good as it could be in order to be environmentally friendly. Because the company is saying that they are into keeping the environment safe, I decided to email the company and ask them the reasons for having two layers of packaging and if they would consider changing from two layers to one layer.

My EmailI am doing an assignment for my global studies class on packaging and the environment. This project asks us to find a product that we think has been over packaged and analyse it. I have purchased one of your chocolate blocks and have noticed that it seems to be over packaged. This is because instead of having one layer of packaging there is two covering the chocolate. I was wondering if you could justify a reason for this amount of packaging.
