Frozen Blueberries
The different layers of packaging inside the Frozen Blueberries include a box on the outside and a snap lock bag on the inside with the blueberries in it. The unnecessary component is the cardboard box which has no real use to the consumer after the purchase. As soon as the box has been opened the snap lock bag goes back in the freezer and the cardboard box is thrown out. It takes about two months for cardboard to decompose which isn't a really long time, but the extra packaging is a waste of material that could be used to make something of more use to other consumers. It takes plastic 10-20 years to decompose. The cardboard is a lot more sustainable than the plastic, but isn't able to hold the blueberries by themselves otherwise the cardboard by itself would be a better way to package the blueberries. In this case the packaging could have been cut down by getting rid of the cardboard box and leaving the snap lock bag. It is known that most products are over packaged due to the fact that consumers buy the product if it looks safe and fresh to eat. In the case of the blueberries the snap lock bag would have been just as fresh and safe to eat looking as the cardboard box, the company would have to just place the name and details on the snap lock bag. It would be a more sustainable way of selling the frozen blueberries.
The different reasons for the packaging is security and protection. This is where the packaging is protecting the products from damage and keeping it secure from the manufacture to the customer. Another reason is the theft prevention and this is the packaging that companies make larger to make it harder to steal the product off the shelves in the store.

After realising how over packaged the blueberries were I decided to email the company that sold the product and ask them why they have packaging the product the way that they have.
My EmailI am a student in Brisbane. In my year nine Global Studies class we are covering a waste assignment on packaging in retail stores. Part of the assignments task is to analyse an over packaged product. A product in your store that has come to my attention that has been over packaged is is the 'Frozen Blueberries' as the contents are not only packaged with a plastic bag, but a cardboard box also. I was wondering if you would be able to give me a justification for the over packaging of this product. Would appreciate a quick response to my query.

ResponseUnfortunately, the company did not give an exact response they told me that they could not assist with individual assignments.
