Hey,
Today I had a look at a great website on 'Packaging and the Environment' (website name in Bibliography) and came to realise some shocking things about the way we produce, sell and re-use packaging. As I am only just starting my assignment on Waste, I was thinking that it would be good to define problems with packaging before I get onto analysing my four products of choice. I took some notes on my findings.
VALUABLE RESOURCES
< Packaging takes a lot of energy, water and other natural resources to produce.
<Oil, which is used in the making of plastic is a rare and valued commodity.
<Because there is such a large production of plastic oil is becoming rarer and rarer.
< Australia has doubled the amount of natural resources that they use yearly.
<After we throw that packaging away, some of it only after one use, these valued commodities are lost.
PACKAGING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
<Waste from packaging pollutes the air, water and soil.
<1.9 million tonnes of waste produces the same amount of greenhouse gas as 860,000 cars.
< Litter created can end up in many places that it shouldn't be in, places like.
<Stormwater drains and causing problems with the wildlife.
<Sometimes it can end up in our streams, rivers and oceans.
<When in these places it can be mistaken by marine life and birds as food.
<This can cause serious injuries on the birds.
RECYCLE
<Recycling is part of the solution.
< When we recycle our packaging we can recover some of the energy that went into making it.
<We can also reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
<But, not all of the energy used to create packaging can be recovered by recycling.
<Reducing the amount of packaging that we use or avoiding it all together. It is a very effective way of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and it's effect on our environment.
DID YOU KNOW?
The state government made a commitment in the last election in order to use the powers of the environment protection authority to require brand owners and industry members to take back packaging and other waste if agreed targets are not met.

After hearing about the impact that over packaged products are having on the environment. I decided to research more into the matter and create a blog on my findings.
